August 22nd, 2016|

Not all efforts to improve your search engine optimization (SEO) results need to be costly or major time investments.

If you have a budget for an in-depth audit of your web content to increase rankings on top search engines, such as Google or Bing, feel free to contact us.

But if you’re looking for easy ways to increase visitor traffic to your web property, here are five no-cost tips from me to you. For this list I’ll be avoiding “Sign Up For Google Webmaster Tools,” or others which you’re likely aware.

Improve SEO

1. Add SSL Privacy To Your Website

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a computer networking protocol which manages server authentication, client authentication and encrypted communication between servers and clients. For us end-users, it basically means your website will be keep data safe from monitoring and tampering.

It’s the HTTPS:// with the green lock in your browser.

Google gives kudos to using SSL and ranks websites which have the protocol higher in search results.

Adding this feature can be found online for free or very inexpensive using trusted services such as CloudFlare.

2. Improve Semantics Of Your Website URLs

Of these two options, which one tells you more about the content of the page?

Google and Bing are just like you and me! Well, maybe not. But it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand why having descriptive URLs helps with SEO. If the URL path of your page or post is similar to the title of your page or post, even better.

Take a look at the URL for this article in your browser. It’s not a coincidence.

3. Get High Domain Authority Inbound Links

If there is ever an opportunity for you to provide content or be interviewed by an industry niche leader; do it. And have them link to your website. The more credible the resource, the better.

When some of my photography was featured in an About.com article, I experienced an increase of traffic organically from the credit link. That was nice. Following the direct traffic was more referral traffic from search engines because my website was linked to by an organization with high domain authority.

Other people I know have benefited from being interviewed as an expert then featured in an online piece, or submitting a blog post to a popular outlet. Google and Bing take consideration into who is linking to your website. Get the best!

Don’t forget to establish Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus business pages. You don’t have to post on them every day, but establishing the direct connection between them and your website will aid in raising your search results.

4. Give Images Titles, Alt Text and Descriptions

Adding metadata to images on your website allows for search engines to “see” what the image is. A description can guide Google and Bing to include your content in their image search results.

In any good content management system (such as Drupal or WordPress), there are fields to add a title, alt text and description to your image programmatically in the website administration. What you include there will inform search engines what your image is about. It helps if your image description relates to the other content or topics on the page.

5. Create A Moz Account To Analyze Website Performance

Moz offers free services to uncover content and link building opportunities, track your website’s link profile over time and compare to competitors for intelligent, targeted link building.

What key words are people using to find you? What keywords are under used by your competitor? Moz can fill you in.

You can also review how your business is listed on local search results which will give you insights into additional opportunities for link building and credibility increases.

For instance, if someone Googles your business location, is your website listed as the website available in the right sidebar of search results? Do you have a location for your business established on Google Maps?

I hope at least one of the items on this list was new to you and helpful. If you would like professional assistance with increasing referrals from search engine results, send me a LinkedIn message.

Happy searching!

Bonus: Use this link to submit new blog posts to Google immediately after publishing them. Shhhhhhh. Don’t tell anyone.
